On the 8th of November representatives of the Nuclear Energy Agency of Mongolia and the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences paid a familiarization visit to Kalinin NPP.

The visit main goal was to familiarize with the Russian experience in construction and operation of nuclear power plants with water-water power reactors (VVER-1000) for the purpose of future cooperation in the field of the peaceful use of atomic energy.

In his welcoming address, Kalinin NPP Acting Plant Manager Igor Bogomolov said: “This is the first time when a Mongolian delegation has visited our site. I hope you have seen what you wanted and could be able to determine areas of future studies of nuclear power where we can be helpful as an organization, which possesses such experience and knowledge. The friendship of our countries, our peoples has a long history and we will develop it further, since a Mongolian proverb says “friendship is the wisest of sciences.”

In the framework of the visit a meeting of the foreign colleagues and the Kalinin NPP management was held. The meeting participants discussed a broad range of issues related to construction of a nuclear power plant, the plant’s environmental impact assessment, arrangements for radiation monitoring, and implementation of science and technology developments. The municipal district heating from NPP was also addressed.

The guests toured to power units of Kalinin Phase One and Two, training center of the plant and had a tour of the Kalinin NPP Public Information Center.

At the end of the visit Baatar Chadraa, the Director of the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences thanked the Kalinin NPP management for hosting the delegation. “Our country’s economy develops in many respects owing to the use of mineral resources. At present, we don’t have sufficient capacities to process the feedstock. In this regard we are interested in building serious sources of electricity generation. Russia is the nearest country to us, which has an entire complex of enterprises comprising a single fuel cycle together with NPPs. Kalinin NPP is a grand facility. We have been long aware of your plant and are glad it has become the first NPP we had seen,” he said.
