The secretary of the General Election Committee, Ch.Sodnomtseren, who replaced N.Luvsanjav, the chairman of General Election Committee, took oath and accepted his position.

Our journalists were present to question the newly appointed Chairman of the General Election Committee about the upcoming local election.

-The General Election Committee must now organize a local election; how is this going to be prepared?

-We are undertaking the preparation work as planned and election units are established in soums and aimagsaccording to the law.  So far 1,998 election units have been established for the local election while the parliamentary election has 1,905 units.  According to an amendment to the local election law, the number of election units has increased. Parties and coalitions are working to nominate candidates in the 2012 local election and the deadline for nominations is October 9th.  Currently two coalitions and five political parties have submitted their materials to the General Election Committee in order to participate in local elections. For instance, an aimag has candidates from 4 parties and a coalition while the Chingeltei district has 6 parties and coalitions.  Preparation is going as planned and the local election will be run on an automatic system.  We started making files designated for ballot with the candidates named and ballots will be approved and printed next week.

– The justice coalition is going to divide into two parties for some units. Is it possible or would it violate local election law?

-Election laws pertaining to aimags, soums, and districts are clearly defined.  Parties and a coalition can participate in an election by joining or independently. Currently two coalitions are registered to participate in the local election.

-When will the campaign start forthe local election?

-According to the law, an election campaign may start two weeks before voting day or when a candidate has been givenhis or her candidate card.

-When will the other MPs take oath and join Parliament?

-Some candidate’scases are still on trial and will be decided according to the law.

-Will re-vote run on the same day as the local election vote?

-The working group said that it is economically possible to run re-vote and local election on the same day as did the Standing Committee on State Structure. Therefore, we are preparing to run both elections on the same day.
