A local election draft law recently passed without a female candidate quota.  Today, however, female members of parliament submitted a draft proposal requesting for a 30 percent quota for women.  MPs Ts.Oyungerel, G.Uyanga, and L.Erdenechimeg reported to journalists about related issues.

The reason given as to why the election law passed without a quota for women was that there are already enough female candidates for local election and, females are elected to local administration and Khural.

However, female MPs said that it is necessary to propose a quota for women for local elections due to new amendments to the budget law in 2013.

Critics, who support the quota, claim that voters often ignore local female candidates.

 The nomination process for the local election will start Octoberber 5th and finish on Octoberber 9th meaning that female MPs only have a day to get parliament to pass the proposal.
