Aviation Systems has been appointed to represent MIAT Mongolian Airlines in
Australia, as the carrier expands its international presence in response to
growing activity in the resources and tourism sectors.
Mongolia is rich in resources including oil, coal, iron ore, gold, silver,
copper, zinc and tungsten, and is attracting increasing interest and visits
from exploration companies, including major operators from Australia. The
Government of Mongolia also is keen to promote the growing range of luxury
tourism experiences in the country’s deserts and national parks, and Mongolian,
the national airline, is expanding to accommodate both the business and tourism
opportunities.
Mongolian currently flies between the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, and seven
foreign cities – Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Berlin and Moscow.
From Australia, the nearest connecting point for passengers is Hong Kong,
from where Mongolian offers up to seven weekly flights to Ulaanbaatar.
Convenient connecting flights are available from Australia with Cathay Pacific.
Mongolian operates two wide-bodied Boeing 767-300ER twinjets and two
narrow-bodied Boeing 737-800s, and has plans to add four more aircraft
including the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner by 2015. The airline’s long haul Boeing
767s seat 263 passengers in a two-class cabin – 18 in Business Class and 245 in
Economy. Business Class features large sleeper seats with 160 degrees of
recline, while passengers in both classes each have large in-seat video
screens.
Mongolian has a growing number of partnerships with quality carriers including
Cathay Pacific, Japan Air Lines and Air Berlin, and has secured from the
International Air Transport Association (IATA) the critical IATA Operational
Safety Audit (IOSA), the benchmark for global safety management in the airline
industry.
Mongolian plans to join an airline alliance network within two years and to
expand its network to destinations including North America.
“Mongolia is a rapidly-evolving market and we are excited to be working with
the Australian travel industry to highlight and promote the opportunities for
both business travel and amazing leisure journeys,” said Kaylene Shuttlewood,
General Manager of World Aviation Systems. “This is a small airline with
big ambitions, and we will be working closely with the company to build both
its profile and its business in the Australian market.”
